Running for Council

Donald Couzens

Donald Couzens is running for Qualicum Beach Council for the first time on October 17, 2026. He hasn’t held public office, and the Town’s records show no earlier role.

Our fact checks of what his campaign says, and what the public record shows about him: Town of Qualicum Beach records, other public records and news reports, each linked on its page.

What we fact checked

  • Council candidate

    Donald Couzens Questionnaire

    • Accurate × 3
    • Corrected × 2

Couzens gives more views than facts. He is right that about 80% of homes are single-detached and that water pipe renewals have been put off. His age figure is too high: about two-thirds of residents are 60 or older, not 80%. He says the law never requires a closed meeting, but in some cases it does. He is right that support for community groups is mostly re-approved each year without an application window. He has since corrected both.

  • Council candidate

    Donald Couzens Website

    • Accurate × 2
    • Misleading × 1

Couzens’s website is mostly promises. His age figure is now right: about two-thirds of residents are 60 or older, where his questionnaire said 80%. He is right that many residents have no family doctor. His one specific charge against Council, about pickleball, is partly right: in May 2026 the club offered to pay the whole cost of converting a tennis court, by its own estimate. But Council hasn’t spent anything near the airport yet. Its offer there depends on the club matching it. The light he asks for at Memorial Avenue and Fir Street is already under contract, as a crosswalk with flashing beacons.

Public record

He hasn’t run in a Qualicum Beach election before. We found no delegation, letter or committee role in his name in the Town’s minutes and agendas, and Elections BC lists no penalty against him.
