Before Eaglecrest: the other golf course
This is not Eaglecrest. The Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course is a separate course on Town-owned land, leased to and run by the Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club. The Town bought it in 1981. Eaglecrest is the course Council agreed to buy in July 2025 and bought that December.
In the first half of this term, Council put $431,000 into the Memorial course in grants and waived fees, and agreed to lend the club $350,000 more out of the water utility. Every one of these votes was unanimous.
The Town hasn’t published the club’s financial statements. A resident obtained them through freedom of information. In the year to February 2025 the club took in $1.22 million and had $242,500 left over. Its irrigation fund held $97,391 at that date. The statements put the fifth-hole bridge at $675,000, and say the club expects to repay its $337,500 half at $67,500 a year, extending its payments to the Town to 2042.
The statements also show who built what. The Town spent $1,350,000 of its reserves on the clubhouse and $650,000 on the maintenance facility. The club pays the clubhouse back at $50,000 a year and the maintenance facility at $35,000 a year, and the statements show no interest. By the end of 2025 it had repaid $996,333 of the $2 million. Under the lease the club maintains and replaces the course’s equipment and improvements; the statements list $2,175,049 of them at cost, bought from green fees and members’ dues. The club has also paid the Town about $1.26 million in rent since 2008. The lease runs to 2037.
