Mischa Oak Website
Mischa Oak is running for Council in Qualicum Beach in the October 17, 2026 local election. This fact check tests the policy and money claims in Mischa Oak’s campaign website, voteoak.ca against Town of Qualicum Beach records: Council minutes, budgets and staff reports. We rated two claims: two accurate. We also set out the record behind four of the promises.
Oak’s website is mostly promises. The two facts it states hold up: thousands of residents have no family doctor, and Council meetings often run three hours or more. The record behind his complaints about closed meetings and consultant spending is the same one that backed his questionnaire answers. His voting date and donation rules are right.
- Accurate × 2
We checked the policy and money claims in Mischa Oak’s campaign website, voteoak.ca. Quotes are exact; […] marks words left out. Each finding lists its sources: Town documents first, then news reports where the Town hasn’t published the facts. What the verdicts mean.
Checked September 22, 2026.

Healthcare here
“Thousands of our neighbours don’t have a family doctor and face long wait times for specialists and primary care.”
Accurate In the Town’s 2025 Quality of Life Survey, 25% of residents said they have no family doctor or nurse practitioner. With about 9,300 residents, that is roughly 2,300 people in town alone.
- Council’s July 2024 resolution funding the Flowerstone Health Society says its clinic serves about 4,000 Oceanside residents who have no family doctor.
- We found no local figures on wait times for specialists.

Good governance is an act of care
“Council meetings stretch for hours, yet leave too little time for real long-term planning and oversight.”
Accurate The Town’s recordings of 50 regular Council meetings this term run a median of about 2¾ hours, and 19 ran three hours or more. Whether that leaves too little time for planning is a judgment.
- The longest, on September 17, 2025, ran over five hours. The recordings can include breaks.

Promises and opinions: the record so far
We don’t rate promises or opinions. Where the website raises an issue with a public record, here is what it shows.

Good governance is an act of care
“Too many Town decisions happen in secret.”
How many is too many is a judgment, so we don’t rate it. The record: Council made several major decisions this term in closed meetings, and the public learned of them months later.
- Eaglecrest decisions from closed meetings in February and July 2025 were released on November 20, 2025, after the rezoning was adopted.
- At a closed meeting on July 9, 2025, Council approved a three-year funding agreement with the Chamber of Commerce and extended the St. Andrews Lodge lease. The public learned of these on September 17, 2025.
- The Eaglecrest restaurant lease and the interim maintenance contract were approved in a closed meeting on March 11, 2026, and made public on June 24.

Town Hall works for you
“Right now, too much money goes to consultants and senior management, and not enough to ensuring there is staff to serve you.”
This is a judgment, so we don’t rate it. We checked his consultant figure in his questionnaire answers: the Town’s supplier lists show about $2 million a year. We didn’t check senior management pay or staffing levels.

Good governance is an act of care
“Meetings should be held at times more people can attend.”
This is a promise, so we don’t rate it. Regular Council meetings are held on Wednesdays at 10 am.

Small town life. World class life.
“Our community volunteers and organizations deserve a plan, consistency and clarity from Town Hall.”
This is a promise, so we don’t rate it. The record shows the problem he describes: ten community requests this term asked for $431,054 and got $105,600, while the Town’s golf course got $431,000 in 2023 and 2024 alone.
Sources: Regular Council minutes, Feb 8, 2023 (Town of Qualicum Beach); Regular Council minutes, Jan 17, 2024 (Town of Qualicum Beach); Regular Council minutes, Feb 7, 2024 (Town of Qualicum Beach); 2026–2030 Financial Plan (adopted Apr 1, 2026) (Town of Qualicum Beach); Special Council minutes, Dec 17, 2025 (Town of Qualicum Beach)
We didn’t check his background, because the Town records we hold don’t cover it: his years in Qualicum Beach, his 17 years of teaching including five at Ballenas Secondary, his company and book, his work with The Old School House, his King Charles III medal and his education. His pledge not to accept donations from developers can be checked only when candidates file their campaign finance disclosures, within 90 days after voting day.
