- Where it stands
- To 2027 planning. Unfunded wish-list idea; moved from the 2026 to the 2027 planning session by the Eaglecrest funding plan.
What it is
This was a Blue Sky idea. That is the Town's term for a new proposal sent in for Council's yearly strategic planning. The Town's list gives only the title: Pride Flag-raising Event. The records show no cost, description or proposer.
On July 23, 2025, Council moved all new Blue Sky ideas for 2026 to the 2027 planning session, including this one. It never had a budget, so no money was moved.
What happened
- June 23, 2020The Town raised a Pride flag at Town Hall for the first time and recognized Pride Week, PQB News reported.
- June 2021The Town declared June Pride Month and flew the Pride flag on its flagpole, PQB News reported.
- July 23, 2025Council moved this and other new ideas from the 2026 to the 2027 planning session (4–1, Councillor Harrison opposed).
- October 24, 2025The planning slides again list it among ideas deferred to 2027.
- June 1, 2026Community members held a Pride flag raising. Council members' reports say they attended.
Why it matters
- One councillor wrote that all members of Council attended the June 2026 event and called it "the community organized event."
- Blue Sky ideas are not budgeted or scored until Council considers them at strategic planning. The same group included a heritage designation idea for the Old Baptist Church.
- Staff said new ideas had to wait because the Qualicum Commons lease and the Eaglecrest purchase were not in their work plans.
